How to determine the size of AC unit (BTU’s) needed?

Follow these steps. Contact the factory for assistance if needed.

  • Take the nameplate power specified of each component (in WATTS) to be installed in the cabinet and add them up.
  • Reduce (derate) by 30%.
  • OPTIONAL – If more components will be added in the future add a 20% safety factor.
  • Multiply total WATTS by 3.41 to convert to BTU’s.

EXAMPLE
You have the following components: QTY 20 – 1U servers at 150 WATTS each. QTY 2 – 5U switches at 200 WATTS each.

3400 WATTS Total
Derate by 30% (3400 WATTS = 2380 WATTS)
Add 20% for future expansion (2380 x 20% = 2856 WATTS)
Multiply by 3.41 to get BTU’s (2856 x 3.41 = 9,738 BTU’s)
In this example a 12,000 BTU AC unit is recommended*

*Assumptions – Room size is larger than 12’ x 12’ x 12’.  Ambient temperature is 85 °F


How to manage the condensate?

The AC unit will not produce condensate if properly installed. These AC units utilize a closed loop system where moisture, if created, is evaporated inside the AC unit itself.

Because this is a closed loop system, there is no need to vent this system.


How does it ship?

The cabinet ships on a pallet. The AC unit ships securely inside of the cabinet. A loading dock is required for standard shipment. Special accommodations can be made for a lift gate or inside delivery.

Double check the overall dimensions of the cabinet to make sure the path from the delivery location to installation location is clear. Make sure it will fit under, and through (width wise), all doorways and/or in elevators.


How to install the AC unit on the cabinet?

The right side of the cabinet (left side mounting upon request) is pre-configured to accommodate the AC unit. Un-box the AC unit, apply the gasket material, and lift into place. Two people are required to lift the AC unit into place. All hardware is included. 

You may need to mount the AC unit AFTER you put the cabinet in the designated location.


What are the power requirements?

A dedicated circuit is required. 20 AMP is preferred, but 15 AMP may be sufficient based on the size of the AC unit. Consult a licensed electrician to determine if you have appropriate power running to the location where the cabinet will be installed.

The cabinet is set up to bring the power into the bottom of the cabinet as shown below:

How to get cables into the cabinet?

Communication cables should come through the top. The top of this cabinet allows terminated cables to drop in through the sliding top cover. Before starting to populate, be sure to check the service loop length is long enough.

Once closed, the compressible memory foam sheets, with a fire and chemical retardant impregnated throughout the
material, seals off the top to eliminate airflow leaks. Max opening is 15.25″ wide x 19.50″ deep.
